Unitarians Show Their Colours!
Please join us on Sunday, July 5 at 10 a.m., for our annual Unitarian Pride Service.
This year, our guest speakers will be Charley Beresford and her son James.
At 16, James Beresford led the establishment of the first gay-straight alliance in his high school.
An active volunteer at AVI and a peer councilor, he earned an Outstanding Service and Citizenship award in his Grade 12 year.
James is now a member of the head injury team in the Claims Co-ordination Unit at Victim's Services in the Ministry of the Solicitor General.
While chair of the Greater Victoria School Board, James' mother Charley led development of the first anti-homophobia action plan to be adopted by a BC school board.
It was backed up by one of the first policy frameworks in Canada.
In recognition of her leadership, Xtra West named Charley “Straight Ally of the Year.”
While much has been achieved in the past few years to establish equality, there are still places where GLBT people do not feel safe.
Charley and James will be sharing their stories and speaking about the importance of activism and why a Pride Celebration is important.
There will be a special dance performance by Stacey Horton, with music accompaniment by Elijah Marrett-Hitch.
Stacey is a choreographer, performer and teacher of dance and theatre, and has collaborated with numerous artists in over 35 new works.
Her choreographies have been presented by Gambling Soles Productions, The Firehall Arts Centre, Shadbolt Centre for the Arts and at festivals including Vancouver’s Dancing on the Edge, Calgary’s Dance Explosions, Seattle’s Under Construction Series and Victoria’s Reel Dance Film Festival.
Stacey currently performs with the triPOD Dance Collective in Victoria, and is expecting her and her partner, Maureen Bradley’s, first child in August.
Barbara Boyle will also be singing, so don’t miss it!
The First Unitarian Church of Victoria is at 5575 West Saanich Road.
Check our website, www.victoriaunitarian.ca, or call 250.744.2665 for directions or more information.

Chris & Don, A Love Story
|
monday july 6
6:30pm By Donation
1900 Fort Street
Eric Martin Pavilion
|
This remarkable film is about passionate three-decade relationship between two men, 3 decades apart in age and openly gay in an era when homosexual relationships were mostly “in the closet”.
British writer Christopher Isherwood (whose Berlin Stories became the hit Cabaret) and Don Bachardy who became known for celebrity portraits and nude studies, grew up and old as a couple.
Not just a great story but a beautifully realized film; amazing archival footage, candid interviews especially from Don, and a heartening theme of acceptance and the triumph of art in a life.
90min 2007 PG13
plus: The Chosen Family by Victoria’ filmmaker Maureen Bradley 2001 13min
By donation - at the Eric Martin Pavilion 1900 Fort Street
